Boy have I been a busy bee, I have been trying to complete my finals for school and I got my first web design client.
Well it’s not really a web design client, already have a company website. They are not happy with it, so I am redesigning it and adding the Site Link payment functionality.
Site Link allows customers to get online and make payments and manage their accounts.
Have I ever setup a Site Link web based server to a website? Can you say nope, but I am very good at figuring things out so I have no doubt that I will be able to accomplish what they want.
Even though I learned how to work with Bootstrap and Zurb Foundation, I realize that I want to focus more on WordPress. I love working with WordPress and know a lot more about it than Bootstrap or Zurb.
I have been working with WordPress for several years and I absolutely love it. So my niche is going to be websites built using the Genesis Foundation…because I love it and I know that my future clients will as well.
I am Creating A Website For My New Venture
When I started IM With Susan Velez, I really had no clue what I wanted to do. All I knew was that I wanted to make money online. I mean isn’t that everyone’s dream who ventures into the Internet marketing world?
So I started flipping websites, creating WSO’s, blogging and dipping my feet into anything that I thought would make me money. I invested into several different coaching programs and bought countless ebooks.
Although I don’t mind investing the money that I paid as I learned a lot….sometimes I think I learned a lot more from YouTube and Linda Courses than I did from my 2 years plus at my community college.
I realize that I enjoy setting up WordPress sites and learning the coding aspect of it. Now I am not a pro and things are constantly changing, but I really enjoy it a lot more than creating quick WSO’s.
What I have learned throughout my online journey…is that we all have to find our path when the time is right. Unfortunately, it takes some of us longer to learn what we enjoy and what we want to focus on before we wake up.
So what did I learn since I setup this site back in 2013…I will reveal everything I learned later in this post.
Now this doesn’t mean that I won’t be creating my own products…because I do enjoy creating products as well. However, since I have gotten more into the website creation aspect, I realize I really enjoy it.
I am diving into the world of PHP and realizing that I really love it. Plus I love creating a website and watching it flourish into a full blown website that has several pages indexed in the search engines.
So I guess what I am saying is that regardless of where you are in terms of making money online, the truth is that you have to find your own way and find out what you enjoy doing.
I have started creating a website for my new venture. My new website is called Web Pages by Susan and it will be geared more towards web design and WordPress.
It is still a work in progress with me trying to finish school and working on my first client website, I have not had a lot of time to devote to my new website.
If you are just starting online….I highly recommend that you avoid the same mistakes that I made. Most of us can setup a WordPress blog with our eyes closed, especially, if you set it up using Fantastico. (which I do not recommend)
So what is the point of this post?
Well I know that most people who get started online want to make money…so they quickly setup a niche blog in hopes that they will see affiliate commissions.
Most people never take the time to plan when creating a new website. Instead they throw up a new blog and create a couple of posts.
Then when that doesn’t work they run out and buy the next shiny object because it promises to teach them how to make money fast.
The truth is that there is no push button system that will teach you how to make money online. Anyone creating a website can make money if they take the time to treat their Internet marketing venture like a real business.
I want to share with you what I learned since I set this site up and hope that you avoid these mistakes the next time you are considering creating a website.
Avoid These Mistakes When Creating A Website
Choose A Niche You Are Passionate About: I know that most people will tell you that they can blog about anything as long as it makes them money. While it is true money is a big motivator.
But ask yourself, what if it takes you a year to start making money?
Can you really blog about how to French braid your niece’s hair for a year?
I know from my own experience, I couldn’t. I have had blogs in all kinds of niches and I hated turning on the computer when I had to create a new post. Creating a website is just half the battle…in fact, it’s the easiest part of starting a new venture.
If you want to drive traffic to your blog, you are going to have to write content.
I spent half the day surfing the Internet because I didn’t know what to blog about. So be sure that you choose a niche you are passionate about, otherwise you will dump the blog before you see any profits.
Niche Down: As you can see from this site, I blog about all kinds of things, flipping websites, product creation, web design and getting started online.
I am all over the place..so it really makes it difficult to gain readers who are interested in my blog. Although this blog makes some money, I could’ve done a lot better.
Now I am not giving up this blog because it does make me some money and it is more about my journey to a full-time income.
However, since I am getting more involved with web design aspect, I will be blogging more about that, plus I am creating a website based on my new venture.
A blog that is not niche focused can still make money, I highly recommend that you start a blog that is niche focused to retain your readers.
How Often Should I Post Content: The truth is that it is your blog and you get to decide how often you want to post content. I try to post content at least once per week. Sometimes more if I have time.
Try to find a schedule that works for you and stick with it.
You do not have to post content on a daily basis. Plus if you are working a day job or working on other projects, you will find it very hard to post on a daily basis.
Avoid free hosting accounts: I never made this mistake, but I see people doing it all the time. They think that they can setup a website using free hosting.
While it is possible because people do it all the time, I do not recommend it.
You have to remember, you are building a business and it is going to require you to spend some money.
I know that you want to pinch your pennies and spend as little as possible, especially, when you are not making any money.
What Are The Best WordPress Themes: When I setup my first website, I think that I set it up using Clickbump themes. Now I use nothing but Genesis.
I use Optimize Press if I am creating my own products.
I highly recommend that you invest in your own theme if you want to create a blog that says you are serious. Sure you can use free WordPress themes and many people do.
However, free themes may have hidden code and links that can take away from your site.
Why would you want to spend hours promoting your site if your theme has a link to someone else’s site?
Most free themes have links in the footer that give credit to the theme creator. Which in my opinion they should get credit for creating the theme and offering it to people for free.
But I do not know about you, I do not want to spend my time promoting their site.
You do not have to spend a lot of money on themes, in fact, I highly recommend that you purchase one theme and stick with it.
Make sure that it is a mobile friendly theme. The last thing you want to do is have your site penalized from the latest Google Mobile Apocalypse or Mobilegeddon Update…you can read about it here.
If you already have a theme or insist on using a free theme, then you can test the responsiveness of your site here.
Focus On Your Readers: When I got started I focused on keywords in hopes getting a page one ranking on Google.
People who get high Google rankings are the ones who get the most traffic. What good is a blog if you do not get any visitors?
What I learned is that you need to focus on your readers. Yes you want to write for the search engines, because you do want high rankings.
But you want to focus on providing high quality content for your readers. Your goal is to attract and help people who visit your site. If you are actually providing useful content, more people will keep coming back to your website.
Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket: As you know I mentioned that I have bounced from one niche to the next. But that is not what I am talking about here.
When I first started out, I was 100% reliant on SEO. In fact, all my money came from my SEO efforts. I grew one of my niche sites to over $1500 per month based on pure SEO marketing methods.
I was happy that I had finally figured out how to rank sites on Google using SEO.
When Google started making all their algorithm updates, my income dried up. I lost everything and had to start all over.
It’s never fun when you have to start from scratch. So while you do not want to stretch yourself out too thin, you never want to rely completely on one source of traffic for your website.
Persist Towards Your Goals: There is no push button system to making money. If you are serious about building a real business, you are going to have to roll up your sleeves and get busy.
In fact, there may be days when you wonder why you are doing it?
Take the time to sit down and figure out why you want to create an income online. If your why is huge, you will keep working towards your goals, no matter how long it takes.
Do Not Short Change Yourself: What do I mean by this? It took me years to finally start creating my own products because I didn’t think that I had enough experience or knowledge to teach others how to do things.
In fact, I still find my little voice trying to tell me that with my new web design and website setup services.
You may have been putting on creating your own products or writing your first ebook because you think you are not ready. That is the funny thing about most people…we are our own worst enemies.
We tend to believe that we are NOT good enough or ready to follow our dreams.
The truth is that if you are good enough. You can pursue your goals and do whatever it is you want to do.
Sure you may fail and fall along the way. But the point is that you need to dust yourself off and keep striving towards your goals.
Do not give in to failure, because the only way that fail in this business is to give up 100%. You need to remember that this is not a race, it is a marathon.
It does not matter how long it takes you to become successful…as long as you become successful.
Do Not Worry About Others Success: Let me explain myself with this…I love reading people’s success stories because it inspires me to keep working towards my goals.
Who does not like to read an inspirational story?
What I mean is that I hate it when people say how long did it take you to finally start seeing money?
Regardless of whether it took me two weeks, two months or even two years to start seeing success, does not mean that it will take you the same amount of time.
The truth is that it can take you less time or more time to see success.
You are the only one who can put in the work that it requires to become successful. So stop asking the question how long does it take to make money online.
You can answer that question by creating a website and getting started with your new online venture.
Regardless of what you have accomplished online or how much money you have wasted trying to find the right system to create money online. We have all been there.
The truth is that you can create the success you desire. You can start by creating a new website in a niche you are passionate about and stick to it. Avoid all the hype that goes on in the make money niche….
So let me know below are you creating a website and if so what niche are you entering? Is it something that you love or have been wanting to get into but put it off because you did not think you were ready?
